GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas — Cadets from Angelo State University Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 partnered with Goodfellow for multiple weeks to conduct their annual field training exercise, preparing them for their future roles as Air Force leaders.

On Feb. 26, cadets received hands-on combat tactics training from the 17th Security Forces Squadron Defenders in preparation for an upcoming deployment exercise at ASU.

The training aimed to enhance the cadets’ tactical proficiency and leadership skills in realistic combat scenarios. The 17th SFS, using their experience, taught the cadets essential techniques, including small unit tactics, force protection strategies and responding to hostile engagements. This training gave them a deeper understanding of military operations in a deployed environment.

“Having the opportunity to teach the future leaders and officers of the military is a privilege and a humbling experience,” said Senior Airman Stuart Jenne, 17th Security Forces Squadron military working dog trainer. “Hopefully, we can make a positive impact on their lives and roles as they continue to prove themselves as qualified officers.”

The hands-on training involved simulated combat drills and patrol tactics, allowing cadets to experience the complexities of tactical decision-making in a controlled environment. The cadets worked in squads to execute mission objectives while responding to simulated threats, honing their ability to operate under pressure.

These exercises bridge the gap between the classroom and real-world operations, preparing the cadets for future leadership roles in the Air Force.

On March 7th, the cadets put their skills to the test. They conducted a field training exercise designed to test their strategic thinking, teamwork and adaptability in a simulated combat environment. The scenarios required them to defend a strategic base from opposing forces, complete a patrol mission to rescue a downed pilot and engage with locals in a nearby village to gather intelligence and build relations.

During the base defense operation, cadets established defensive positions while coordinating fire teams and responding to enemy attacks while under constant fire. They worked together to repel multiple waves of hostels, adjusting their tactics in real-time to counter evolving threats. This scenario emphasized the importance of communication, situational awareness and decisive action under pressure.

The cadets went on patrol to locate and rescue a downed pilot. They navigated through challenging terrain using their land navigation skills and avoided simulated improvised explosive devices to extract the pilot. Upon locating the pilot, they were attacked by enemy forces and forced to provide first aid and secure the area under fire. This portion of the exercise tested their ability to operate in unfamiliar environments while managing resources and prioritizing mission objectives.

While interacting with local villages in a simulated community engagement scenario, cadets had to establish trust with their leaders. They overcame language barriers and gathered critical information that could impact future operations. The role-players acted as local civilians, presenting a mix of cooperative and uncooperative attitudes, requiring the cadets to constantly adapt their approach and employ their diplomacy skills.

These cadets demonstrated resilience and leadership qualities vital to their development. This exercise and the training they received will serve as the foundation for their continued training, preparing them for any challenge in their military careers.
