EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — The 412 Security Forces Squadron at Edwards AFB is set to introduce speed carts to combat speeding and enhance traffic safety within the installation.
The purchase, totaling $15,224.90, is a strategic investment in the safety and operational readiness of the base, aimed at mitigating major vehicle accidents caused by speeding.
The speed carts are designed to capture clear photos of speeding drivers and save the images on a removable device for review.
They will be solar-powered, deployable, and installed with the assistance of Scott Total Security, an established provider of traffic camera systems. This collaboration ensures the seamless integration of the system into the base’s infrastructure, enabling the 412 SFS to retrieve photos of speeding individuals without an internet or central database connection.
The equipment will be critical to the effective performance of law enforcement and security duties by the 412 SFS. The 412 SFS aims to have the system installed and operational by the end of 2024, with a projected implementation date no later than December.
The California Vehicle Code (CVC) requires that drivers be notified about speed monitoring devices, commonly known as “speed carts” or radar speed feedback signs. The relevant section is **CVC § 21455.5**.
This section outlines the requirements for the use of automated traffic enforcement systems, including radar speed signs, and mandates proper signage and public notice before the installation and operation of such systems. Specifically, drivers must be informed through clearly visible signs posted within a certain distance of the speed monitoring devices.
The goal of this regulation is to ensure that drivers are aware of speed monitoring and have the opportunity to adjust their speed accordingly, which aligns with the broader objective of improving road safety.
The 412 SFS remains committed to engaging with the community and promoting transparency. Moreover, the base will notify the public about the implementation of speed carts through various means, promoting a cooperative environment for enhanced traffic safety.
