Kirtland Air Force Base has unveiled a new weapon in its security arsenal: the Mountain and Desert Defense Team (MADD-T). Officially launched on February 1st, this specialized unit within the Security Forces Group utilizes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to patrol the base’s expansive perimeter, significantly bolstering security and situational awareness.

Col. Matthew Foisy, Commander of the 377th Security Forces Group, addressed the need for an additional highly mobile security presence. Currently comprised of three defenders, the team is slated to double in size by the end of the month.

MADD-T’s value was recently showcased when they were called upon to assist the 377th Range Operations and Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department in a search and rescue operation over the weekend. This joint effort, which also saw Kirtland deploying personnel with Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) capabilities, involved the search for a missing elderly woman. The Kirtland teams worked tirelessly alongside local authorities, providing essential manpower and aerial support throughout the day and into the evening.

This incident underscores the team’s versatility and readiness to contribute beyond base security. “I got an amazing sense of pride when I called on these defenders over the weekend, and they dropped everything to make this mission happen very quickly,” said Foisy.

As MADD-T continues to expand, it promises to be a critical asset in maintaining the security of Kirtland Air Force Base, while simultaneously serving as a valuable resource to local law enforcement agencies when needed. This incident highlights the strong partnership between Kirtland AFB and the surrounding community, demonstrating the dedication of its personnel to utilizing their unique skills to make a difference in critical situations.
