Staff Sergeant John Thomas Self was killed-in-Action on May 14, 2007 when improvised explosive device erupted through his vehicle killing him and wounding three fellow Airmen on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq.

He was on his 79th combat patrol as a fire team leader assisting Iraqis in taking back the streets of Baghdad.  He was a part of the police transition team belonging to the Det. 3 of the 732nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron.
