JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J., — The 87th Security Forces Squadron Commercial Vehicle Inspection unit has been working through the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The team is made up of 25 Airmen and civilians who have in-processed over 3,300 passengers and almost 1,700 tons of medical supplies and equipment from base in the past few months.



“We are essentially the supply line,” said police Lt. Joseph Donato, 87th SFS CVI section head. “We check every vehicle that delivers to base and make sure they are cleared to enter.” 

Every driver has to receive pre-approval to enter the base, which includes a full background check. Their vehicle is then directed through the inspection line where 87th SFS Airmen systematically and thoroughly perform an inspection.

“Under the Joint Integrated Defense Plan, every driver is told that they must open every compartment, door, and bag,” said police Sgt. Raymond Couts, 87th SFS CVI operations supervisor. “Everything is subject to search.”

As Joint Base MDL processed supplies and personnel specific for the Joint Task Force mission, CVI was checking every vehicle in-coming to the installation to make sure protocol and safety remained priority. 

“We don’t circumvent security for any purpose,” said Couts. “We make more apprehensions here than any SFS unit [on Joint Base MDL]. Our people have been in this fight since day one – doing their job.” 

Working under the JTF, the team would receive deliveries at fluctuating rates. To accommodate, they had teams ready 24/7 with support of 87th SFS members outside of CVI to accomplish the mission. 

“I’m really proud of our guys,” said Donato. “The whole squadron has been supporting CVI during this time. They know that the focus is on us to get all the trucks through, and every [SFS] section has been very helpful to us.”  

CVI is one of the many essential units across Joint Base MDL that has made the fight against COVID-19 much more effective.
